From the home office and around the fields

At Hui earlier in November, we recommissioned Murray back to life and service in New Zealand. Here is the Minute of Appreciation we read to honour and acknowledge his service with us.

On behalf of the Baptist Churches of New Zealand, NZBMS wishes to acknowledge the overseas missionary service of Murray, sent from Northcote Baptist Church, and we move this minute of appreciation.

Murray has completed six years of service with NZBMS in South Asia, the first two as a short-termer and latterly as a long-termer. We remember too, the three years Murray served in Papua New Guinea in the early 1980s along with his late wife Jennie, and their two children.

Ostensibly, Murray has led Freeset’s infrastructure team; renovating and building factories, offices, classrooms and living spaces for the business. Through his work, Murray has played a key role as Freeset has sought to reach more women with the freedom Christ offers. However, Murray’s most significant role has not been renovating and constructing buildings. Rather, he has stood within our team as a totara planted by the stream of living water.

He has been a source of quietly-spoken wisdom, offered with grace. His quick wit and good humour brought levity and perspective in stressful times. His deeply-rooted faith provided much needed strength and stability to the team. We honour Murray for doing nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility he has valued others above himself, not looking to his own interests but to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:3-4). Murray is truly one who would say, “Ehara taku toa, he takitahi, he toa takitini.” (My success should not be bestowed onto me alone, as it was not individual success but success of a collective.) And Murray would go on and give credit to God.

And so, as we recognise Murray, we bring glory and honour to his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Murray, finally you have made it back to New Zealand! Enjoy your family, and know that our prayers are with you.

We, your Baptist brothers and sisters in Christ, thank you for the way you have represented us and we wish you every blessing for the future.
