The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

In 2017 we will be focusing on the theme of treasure. For me, this theme of treasure immediately brings to mind some of Jesus’ parables. In one he says that “the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44).

To be honest, all this talk of treasure hidden in the field sounds a little far-fetched. But, according to M. J. Wilkins’ commentary on Matthew, “treasures were often hidden in fields, because there were no formal banks as we know them today. It was not uncommon for people to hide valuables when a marauding army approached. If the homeowner did not survive the invasion, the treasure would be forgotten and unclaimed. The land could change hands several times without anyone being aware of hidden treasure.”

Here in this parable, we see someone accidently discovering one of these hidden treasures. Now I realise that the point of the parable is that the treasure of the Gospel is worth paying any price for. Yet, I cannot help thinking how great a tragedy that this treasure was hidden. How many generations lived and worked that field without recognising the kingdom that was so close to them?

The kingdom of heaven really is a treasure worth sacrificing everything for. May you work diligently to ensure that we are not those who hide and forget about this treasure, but that we toil until the treasure is revealed and shared with all. And please join me in praying for those we have sent to the fields of Asia, that they too will see the treasure of the Gospel revealed in the soil there.
