Meanwhile, in their city, the sewing business is facing more changes. The demand for the sari blankets has been excellent but the area where it is situated is steadily becoming a more affluent part of the city. As the slums have been demolished, and apartments built, the women have to live further away and travel further to work. Alternative employment is available in the houses of the rich and the rental cost for the building has become too high. In another part of town the hand-made stationery business is going well in the new building and they have enjoyed having Peter and Leonora back from New Zealand. Together they are planning for the future of the work. They are making some much needed changes to streamline the business, making it more efficient and re-focusing its emphasis. |
