neil-177x250Auckland Anniversary Weekend was somewhat of a cross-cultural experience for me as Barb and I, along with 25,000 others, attended the annual Parachute Festival. A veritable smorgasbord of primarily youth-focused music, seminars, preaching, portaloos, food stalls and tents! Our primary reason for attending Parachute was to be part of the team looking after the “New Zealand Baptists Reaching the World” stand. This comprised mainly a huge banner outlining the four arenas of our overseas work: tranzsend, Mission World, BANZAid, and Marketplacers, similar to the centre spread in February’s NZ Baptist. We were a part of a huge “Global Expo” marquee that housed about 50, mainly overseas, mission organisations.

Parachute is not the place where we expect to have lots of deep and meaningful conversations with dozens of people signing up. Most of our conversations were around explaining what we do and how we do it. These were great opportunities to help people become more globally aware and to introduce people to the concept of Christian mission. However, we did have several significant conversations with people who are really serious about committing to a lifetime of overseas mission service.
