School holidays can mean looking for ways to fill in time for children, regardless of where they are from. In South East Asia, recently the boredom of long days led to an opportunity for Peter and Lynley.
During the second week of the school holidays, Lynley ran extra English classes for primary-aged children. Lynley had been getting to know the mother of one boy, First, who had been sitting in on the classes with her son. During these extra lessons she brought along two more brothers – James and Job. It turns out that they had a Christian grandfather. They accompanied First and friends the next week when they decided to visit Peter and Lynley's house. Each day more and more children arrived until there were 14 children aged from 5 to 16 spread across their lounge. "They were playing Uno, colouring in, playing with marbles or playing the guitar, or watching the Jesus DVD," Lynley says. "We knew some of them from classes at the centre, but others were new to us."
Peter and Lynley's colleague, Dudu, visited First's mother and offered to run a kids' club on Saturdays for the children in the street. She was very happy to have Dudu and her friend Somjai spend time with the children and share about Jesus. At least 10 of them have been given a copy of the New Testament through the programme so far.
"This opening is an answer to prayer," Lynley says, "as we often prayed for these neighbours as we drove past each day." Seven of the children now come to regular English lessons on Wednesdays and Peter and Lynley continue to build bridges with their families. Their next plan is to hold a Christmas celebration for the neighbourhood on December 24 and continue to share the good news of Jesus.
