Beulah – Recognising Service Print E-mail

Beulah has worked tirelessly to address issues of inequality in the treatment and attitudes towards women in India. From her prolific writing to her teaching in theological institutions, she has poured out her energies in the name of restoring dignity and honour to those who are overlooked or mistreated because of their gender. Recently, that passion was acknowledged on an international level.

Earlier this year Beulah travelled to Seattle to present an address at the Christians for Biblical Equality conference. Although she suffered the loss of her laptop just days before she left, she was able to reconstruct her material and make the presentation, which was warmly received. The next day, Beulah was amongst six individuals recognised with lifetime achievement awards. The citation commended her for "sacrifice, courage, and vision in advancing the biblical basis for gender equality." Beulah was characteristically humble about the unexpected award, but she was "pleased that these American leaders care for my writing, and for what is happening in NZ and India."

Weeks later she was back in India, where she was invited to officiate at the dedication of the women's refuge of the Institute for Family Well-Being. The organisation is led by a young woman Beulah has been mentoring for more than seven years, and her involvement there is another example of her commitment to champion the dignity and rights of women in that society.
